Mayor Toby Barker Receives MTA Governmental Tourism Leadership Award

Hattiesburg, Mississippi – Mayor Toby Barker has been honored with the Mississippi Tourism Association’s (MTA) Governmental Tourism Leadership Award, recognizing his significant contributions to Hattiesburg’s tourism growth and development.

Since taking office in 2017, Barker has prioritized tourism as a key driver of economic development. His collaborative efforts with Visit Hattiesburg and the Hattiesburg Convention Commission have led to record visitation numbers and positioned the city as a destination for both cultural and outdoor experiences. Notable initiatives under his leadership include the expansion of sports tourism, the enhancement of outdoor recreation through the development of blueways and greenways and the promotion of public art through large-scale murals and sculptures.

“Tourism is a crucial part of Hattiesburg’s growth, and it has been a team effort to make our city a vibrant place for visitors,” said Barker. “I am grateful for the ongoing partnerships with Visit Hattiesburg, the Hattiesburg Convention Commission and the many talented citizens and organizations that continue to drive these efforts.”

A signature event of Barker’s administration is the Midnight on Front Street New Year’s Eve celebration, which attracts over 10,000 attendees annually. This event, along with the city serving as a champion for parks investments, university activities, school events and citizen-led traditions in the Mardi Gras season and the month of October, has contributed to the city’s reputation as a regional destination for arts, culture and entertainment.

Barker’s leadership also extends beyond tourism. His efforts to secure state and federal funding for projects such as the Pinebelt Blueways and the Hattiesburg Community Arts Center have enhanced outdoor recreation and expanded the city’s cultural offerings. His tenure as President of the Mississippi Municipal League (2023-2024) and prior experience as a state legislator further demonstrate his commitment to advancing Hattiesburg’s economic and tourism goals.

Before the pandemic, visitor spending in Hattiesburg exceeded $300 million annually, and Barker’s leadership has been instrumental in the city’s continued tourism growth. His advocacy at the state level has ensured that Hattiesburg remains a priority for tourism development and infrastructure investment.

Mayor Barker’s receipt of the MTA Governmental Tourism Leadership Award reflects his dedication to creating a thriving tourism economy that benefits residents and visitors alike.
