Hattiesburg, Mississippi – To help kick off Make a Difference Day celebrations this week, Mayor Toby Barker joined both the Hattiesburg Fire Department and the Hattiesburg Police Department to pick up litter throughout the neighborhood between Hardy Street and Deason Avenue, from Klondyke Street to Williams Street.
“We strive to kick off the week of Make a Difference Day each year with our public safety departments by picking up litter along these corridors,” said Barker. “Keeping our city clean is a community value, and we feel it’s important to open this week by leading from the front. With a fire station on East Hardy Street and the police station here on Klondyke Street, it makes the most sense to begin here.”
Since 2017, the City of Hattiesburg has hosted a full Saturday of service projects across several different sites to celebrate the annual event. Throughout the years, the day has expanded into a celebration the week before to support employers who are promoting civic engagement.
Additional events this week include:
- Friday (Oct. 22), Merchant Foods Employees Clean Up Edwards Street, 10 a.m.
- Friday (Oct. 22), PCS Students Clean Up Hwy 11, 4 p.m.
- Saturday (Oct. 23), Make a Difference Day, 8 a.m. – Noon
