Hattiesburg, Mississippi – Fire Station 1, located at 810 Main Street, will temporarily reassign its crews and equipment starting today as a new HVAC system is installed. The Hattiesburg City Council approved the $293,000 project on July 2, 2024.
During this installation, the station’s two fire apparatuses, Ladder 1 and Engine 1, will be temporarily reassigned to ensure continued coverage and service in the downtown area. Ladder 1 and its crew will be relocated to Station 7. Engine 1 will remain at Station 1, but its crew will be temporarily assigned to Stations 2, 4, and 5 to maintain the necessary manpower.
“This project is long overdue, and we’re glad to see it underway after a year of exploring HVAC options, designing the system and going to bid,” said Barker. “The safety of our firefighters and functionality of our fire stations are of great importance. We believe this temporary reassignment during construction, similar to the reassignment used when Station 1 was built, will allow us to continue providing the very best in fire service to the Hattiesburg community.”
Fire Chief Sherrocko Stewart added, “The temporary reassignment of Station 1 has been carefully planned to ensure there is no disruption in service. We remain committed to providing effective emergency response during this time.”
The project is anticipated to take eight weeks to complete.
