HATTIESBURG, Mississippi – The City of Hattiesburg has released the draft of its Safe Roads Hattiesburg Safety Action Plan, designed to improve street safety and reduce severe crashes by 50% by 2032, with an ultimate goal of eliminating them within city limits. Residents are encouraged to review the draft and provide feedback at hattiesburgms.com/saferoads.
Developed with input from two rounds of public feedback, including an online survey and in-person events, the Safety Action Plan incorporates community priorities into strategies for safer streets. This draft identifies key improvements in road design, policy updates and projects to address safety concerns for all road users. From 2019 to 2023, Hattiesburg recorded 17,791 crashes, including 55 fatalities, 15 of which involved pedestrians.
“Safe, accessible and reliable transportation within the City of Hattiesburg is a top priority,” said Mayor Toby Barker. “Over the past 10 months, we have engaged our residents and poured through crash data in order to draft a Safety Action Plan for our community. I ask our residents to take a look and offer their feedback as we finalize this document over the next month. We are committed to seeing this plan implemented, and we want it to reflect the will of our citizens and provide solutions to the many safety challenges on our roads.”
The final Safety Action Plan, expected in December 2024, will enable the city to apply for funding to implement these projects.
