Position: Traffic Operations Manager
Department: Transportation and Engineering
Division: Traffic Maintenance

Rate of Pay: $17.50/hour

Nature of Work:
This position reports directly to the Division Manager of the Traffic Maintenance Division and is responsible for the planning and supervision of measures related to signs, markings, and work zone traffic control within the City of Hattiesburg. This individual will supervise and work beside a team of crew members for implementing, maintaining, and overseeing lane closures, road closures, and installing and maintaining roadway signage and pavement markings.

Representative Duties:
• Supervise and assist in the regular maintenance, repair, appearance and installation of traffic signage, poles and pavement markings related to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
• Regularly inspect work of crew members to ensure satisfactory completion.
• Coordinate road closures for work zones, special events and other applicable situations.
• Enforce safety rules and performs duties in a safe and orderly manner, complying with all City safety standards; ensure all operations follow state and federal guidelines.
• Conduct managerial duties including correspondence, meeting with manager and department director, purchasing, and budget related items.
• Maintain an inventory and track the use and location of supplies and equipment.
• Maintain record of work performed, including active and completed work orders.
• Work with applicable departments and parties to plan, manage, and perform necessary tasks related to traffic control for special events, such as parades and festivals.
• Subject to after-hour and weekend duties, which may be unplanned, to execute special events or address incidents and concerns of traffic control and safety.

Required Skills and Abilities:
• Firm knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials and supplies used in traffic operations and principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
• Familiar with requirements of the FHWA Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Ability to effectively understand, follow, and communicate written and oral instructions.
• Ability to professionally interact with supervisors, coworkers, employees and the public.
• Possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and in field conditions including substantial heights and all-weather conditions.
• Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and climb to perform work; lift, move and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50lbs, and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
• Ability to work in close proximity to active traffic.
• Willingness to work after hours and on-call as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Valid Mississippi Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
• High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
• IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician Certification OR completion of certification course within the first 6 months of employment.
• IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician Level I Certification OR completion of certification within the first 12 months of employment.
