Hattiesburg Police Department and Forrest County Sherriff Department will hold a joint Police Memorial Service at Lake Terrace Convention Center on Thursday, May 21 at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public. It was originally set to occur during the week of May 15, National Police Week, but was rescheduled due to the tragic deaths of Officers Benjamin Deen and Liquori Tate. National Police Week is a week selected by President John F. Kennedy in 1962 where thousands of law enforcement officers from all around the world participate in events honoring those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. It was on Oct. 1 that he signed a proclamation designating May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week that date falls in as National Police Week.
