Hattiesburg, Mississippi – The city of Hattiesburg officially opened a new playground at Vernon Dahmer Park on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by city officials, community members and local partners.
The playground, which features modern equipment and inclusive play features for children of all ages, was completed at a total cost of $182,640. It is coupled with recent renovations to the Charles E. Smith Pavilion, which totaled $74,800. Combined, these investments represent a total of $257,440 in upgrades to Vernon Dahmer Park.
“This park’s proud history deserves an equally exciting future,” said Mayor Toby Barker. “We believe in this facility and its ability to strengthen and elevate this neighborhood. With each passing year, you will see further demonstration of our commitment to its betterment.”
Funding for these projects was made possible by a $50,000 grant from T-Mobile through their Hometown Grant program, with the remaining costs covered by 1% funds.
The upgrades are part of a broader initiative to revitalize park facilities across Hattiesburg, ensuring accessible, safe and welcoming spaces for residents and visitors alike.
