Position: Planning Intern (Part-Time)

Rate of Pay: $12.00/hr.
Nature of Work:
This position represents the first practical contact a prospective Planner makes with the profession. Work will offer observation and analysis of a wide variety of projects and issues related to planning and land use regulations.
The position requires observation, input, and assistance with various projects in land use. A successful incumbent will work with staff and members of the public using city codes and maps to determine parcel locations, ownership, zoning, flood zones, aerial photography, and historic districts. Work may involve conveying information to the public courteously and in a timely manner. Organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task are a must, as well as a positive attitude and eagerness to serve the public.
Examples of Work:
• Provides support to a team of Planners.
• Assists staff in collecting and preparing data for various planning projects.
• Conducts field work, collects parcel data, and searches land records.
• Prepares maps and planning reports of limited complexity.
• Assists Planning staff at community meetings.
• Presents report findings at community meetings.
• Conducts basic office functions as needed such as data entry, file management, and customer service.
Education and Experience Required:
• College courses related to pertinent specialties such as affordable housing, transportation, land use, architectural design, geography, or other related fields.
• Basic understanding of planning principles.
• Competency in various computer software programs such as Microsoft Office, GIS, and other relevant applications.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Strong research and analytical skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Flexibility and desire to work on varying planning projects.
