Hattiesburg, Mississippi – On Monday, April 3, Mayor Toby Barker announced MaryBeth Bergin as his appointment for City Engineer and Director for Transportation & Engineering.
As the director, she will lead the following five divisions under Engineering and Transportation: engineering, traffic, mass transit, graphic information systems (GIS) and the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).
“We are excited to have MaryBeth lead the City of Hattiesburg’s transportation and engineering team,” said Barker. “Her experience in Mobile, particularly in traffic, will focus and modernize our efforts to create a smarter transportation system for a growing city.
Bergin brings more than 20 years of experience with engineering and traffic-related positions across the private and public sector, specifically with more than 10 at the municipal level. For the past 12 years, she’s served the City of Mobile as the assistant traffic engineering director.
“When I first came to visit, I could sense the energy present and it felt like I needed to be here,” said Bergin. “I look forward to serving the citizens of Hattiesburg. I’m humbled to be selected and I will do my very best on behalf of the city.”
With a bachelor of civil engineering degree from Auburn University, she also holds the following certifications: Registered Professional Engineer in Alabama, certified Professional Traffic Operations Engineer and Certified Alabama Planning and Zoning Official. She was selected as the Alabama Section ITE Transportation Engineer of the Year 2021.
She is the fourteenth individual to serve as city engineer in the City of Hattiesburg and the first woman to serve in the role.
Bergin’s appointment will be placed on the council agenda for review by the Hattiesburg City Council for this week’s meetings. If approved, Bergin is slated to begin Thursday, June 1.
