COMMUNITY CALENDAR

There is never a shortage of things to do or see in the Hub City. If you are looking for something to do, we encourage you to sift through the many events listed here.

If you would like to add your own event, you can do that by clicking here. This form is for promoting an event via the calendar, only. It is not for reserving community centers or spaces. Please see the following guidelines for posting requirements:

  • Listed events must have a point of contact or link for more information (website, ticketing vendor or Facebook event).
  • All events will be submitted for review before being published, with approval in 24-48 hours. If an event is not approved, the point of contact listed on the event will be contacted.
  • A photo for uploading is helpful, but not required.
  • All events should take place in the City of Hattiesburg.
  • The City of Hattiesburg reserves the right to approve or deny any event listing and to edit the content submitted for final publication.
  • The posting of an event does not provide for the event being  endorsed through the status of being “city-sanctioned” (approval needed by the City Council) or “city-sponsored.” However, both city-sanction and city-sponsored events will also be listed here.

NOTE: Submitting an event for publication on the calendar is not the same as filing for a permit to host an event that requires the use of city property, streets or needs traffic support. For permits, you’ll need to submit a permit application to the Hattiesburg Police Department. The application can be downloaded here: Event & Parade Permits.

Let It Shine: A Visit with Fannie Lou Hamer

22 October 2019, 18:30 - 22 October 2019, 20:00
Joe Paul Theater in the Thad Cochran Center, 118 College Drive
Hattiesburg, MS 39406 United States

Sharon Miles, Education Director and Actress with New Stage Theatre in Jackson, MS, will perform the one-woman show featuring the life of Fannie Lou Hamer on October 22. This piece was written over the course of two years and extensive research by Frank Kuhn and Sharon Miles.

Civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer first became involved with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1962. Daughter of sharecroppers from Sunflower County in rural Mississippi, Hamer became one of the founders of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Not only working to ensure rights on a national level, Hamer worked to expand cooperative farms in her home county and build homes for those in need. Her life was filled with joys and sorrows, all the while trying to fight to be heard and to be the voice for others.

Miles brings the life of Hamer to the stage with humor, poignancy, and passion. Sprinkled with songs featuring her amazing voice, Sharon brings an insightful and moving performance to the stage. Her depth of research on the life of Hamer is evident through the detailed stories she recalls and the energy with which she describes the tribulations of this remarkable Mississippi daughter. Read more about Miles’ connection to Hamer’s story here: https://www.visitwithfannielou.com

The Luckyday Scholars Program is bringing Sharon Miles to Southern Miss for this performance, specifically for the freshmen scholars, but this event is open to all who wish to attend. It is a free event.
